In this episode I am pleased to introduce you to the voice of Leading Saints Italia, Marco Ferrini. Marco is a bishop in Florence, Italy and got turned on to the Leading Saints podcast last year by another bishop who recommended it to him. He loved the resource so much that he contacted me about doing a similar podcast in Italian. I am excited to extend the Leading Saints brand over to Italy and continue the work of enhancing leadership in the Church. Bishop Ferrini also talks to us about his Italian pioneer heritage. His mother was one of the first members in Italy. He has served in most leadership callings available in the Church and now has had the opportunity to serve as bishop for the last couple of years.
Bishop Ferrini’s 5 Leadership Principles
- “Remember, Brethren, in this work it is the Spirit that counts.” – Ezra Taft Benson – https://goo.gl/zZjtWZ
- “Never let a problem to be solved become more important than a person to be loved.” – President Monson – https://goo.gl/5ghC6c
- “For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.” – Mosiah 3:19
- “I did read many things unto them which were written in the books of Moses; but that I might more fully persuade them to believe in the Lord their Redeemer I did read unto them that which was written by the prophet Isaiah; for I did liken all scriptures unto us, that it might be for our profit and learning.” – 1 Nephi 19:23
- “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!” – Benjamin Franklin – http://goo.gl/rfzN0W

Great interview Marco and Kurt. What a wise and discerning bishop.
This quote is going in my journal:
“We may mistake things not going our way as a lack of faith when it’s really not. It’s just that faith is not something that pushes our way. Faith is something that pushes ourselves towards Christ and to understand things as He sees them, as Heavenly Father sees them, and when we see things from their point of view everything is different, and then we are more willing to accept anything that could happen That doesn’t mean that we have to be passive and just accept anything that passes in our life for the way it is, but sometimes as we are guided … by the Spirit, we know when its time to let go and when its time to fight for something.”
Grazie Bishop Ferrini. Maybe I’ll see if I can get my priests quorum in Salt Lake City to challenge your priests quorum on Clash Royale!
I’d like to encourage you in your project. First let me give you some context for my comments. I’m an Icelandic citizen who was raised in the mid-west of the USA. I am an English language train who works with adults. I have worked on 4 continents. I was a member of the Florence II branch while Burno Ferrini, Marco’s father, was branch president. In as much as there are only 2 branches in Iceland, there has sometimes been long periods of decline in the church. Currently we don’t have many children so there isn’t much of a primary program. Also we lost a generation which would be in there 30’s now so we don’t have many candidates for leadership positions. Therefore a site like this could be helpful if one can put aside enough pride to learn from someone else.
Since I know Marco, it was natural for me to listen to this. However, because he isn’t fluent in English and because of your interview abilities, I found it laborious to listen to. I’d like to suggest that rather than a “random let’s talk” that you create some specific questions that are easy for a foreign speaker of English to answer. If you could limit the time so that a busy branch president or bishop can more easily justify the time spent listening.
What I liked most was the 5 Leadership Principles that was posted on the page to read and as well as the discussion about them. Thank you for choosing Marco, he is a great example.
