David Goates started The Goates Notes Blog as a suggestion from one of his children. Since then it has been growing in popularity and the content is very thought provoking. You will find a smorgasbord of topics on his blog, but many are focused around the doctrine of Jesus Christ, and very well researched.
David is also the grandson of Harold B. Lee and has many fond memories of his time learning from an inspired grandfather.
I took the time to sit down with David and ask some simple questions about being the grandson of a prophet, speaking his mind to the world, how he approached home teaching as Elder’s Quorum President, and we even discuss the science of conducting sacrament meeting.

Four Suggestions on Conducting Sacrament Meeting
I loved listening to this interview with my dad. He is an amazing man, father, and gospel scholar. His missionary letters regarding various gospel topics were photocopied and passed around my mission to all those missionaries serious about their gospel studies. I consider myself so blessed to have had such an amazing gospel asset at my disposal my entire life. It’s also worth noting that he is the man and leader he is today because of the amazing woman he is married to and took care of so many of the “Martha” responsibilities, so my dad could pursue the scriptures. I love you dad!
Rich
I am grateful for Rich’s mention of Patsy. She certainly filled the “Martha” role while I was preoccupied, but more importantly, those who know her well will attest to her magnificent “Mary” qualities of spirituality which first attracted me to her. Marriage is always and forever a partnership. Together we have been blessed beyond our wildest imagination with an All-Star Team full of children and grandchildren who have far exceeded us in every way. One of the things Grandfather Lee always used to say (quoting an unnamed source) was, “Will we become the grandfathers of great men, or forever remain merely the grandsons of great men?” The thought always humbled me. I am now assured I will someday become the grandfather of great men because of the lessons they are being taught by their parents.
I have a fond memory and love of Patsy. While I lived at University Village with my former husband we had suffered a miscarriage, one of many. We were dealing with infertility and I was crushed and heartbroken. Patsy was my visiting teacher. What a profound influence she was in my life and an example of a love and caring. She nurtured me and welcomed me into your home. I will forever be grateful and I will always remember her and her example.
If I remember right, David, you were a high councilman at the time. The song Because I have been Given Much exemplifies Patsy and my memory is always fresh when that song is sung, often times bringing tears to my eyes.
Thank you for blessing me and teaching me what a true visiting teacher is. I hope someday we may be reunited. I truly felt our Saviors love through Patsy.
