A recent newsletter message sparked a fantastic discussion within the Leading Saints community, and I truly appreciate what I learn from this group.

It got me thinking…

People seem to perceive the purpose of attending church differently.

More accurately, individuals experience various values at church and prioritize them in unique ways.

If someone were to ask me what different values Latter-day Saints derive from attending church, here’s a list that comes to mind:

  • Community/Minister to others/Build Zion
  • Gospel/Doctrinal Education
  • Personal Development/Healing/Revelation/Strength
  • Renewing Covenant Promises with God & Worship Him

Considering this list, which value do you want to experience at church?

Naturally, I want to say… ALL OF THEM!

This is where church can become complex.

On the surface, it may seem possible to embrace all these values, but what happens when they start to conflict, or when one becomes more important than the others?

For example, one of my primary reasons for attending church is the sense of community.

I envision church as the focal point of my neighborhood, where everyone is invited to come together and benefit from the gospel.

However, if this were to happen, it might be tempting to dial down the emphasis on gospel doctrine or personal development.

Strong principles and encouragement for change can sometimes make others uncomfortable, especially if they are simply seeking community.

Conversely, some leaders may prioritize gospel or doctrinal learning.

In such cases, we might find ourselves in a setting where the most scholarly individual lectures us about scripture.

While many may leave feeling that church was a success, others might wonder why we never have the opportunity to engage with one another and build community.

I don’t believe I am more right for valuing community, nor are those who prioritize doctrinal instruction.

We should recognize that there isn’t just one correct way to offer church.

What do you think?

What value do you typically prioritize at church?

Sincerely,
