The observation that the term “presiding” isn’t used much outside the Church is noteworthy and incredibly appropriate. It goes beyond the role of a chairperson or facilitator whose responsibility it is to ensure that the meeting is effective and beneficial to the participants (although it certainly includes that). It speaks to the priesthood authority of a president under whose keys the meeting is authorized, whether the presiding authority holds keys directly, such as a quorum president, a stake president, or an apostle, or whether the leader is authorized to operate under the keys of another, such as a Relief Society president, a bishop’s counselor, or a General Authority Seventy.
