We’re With You is a compilation of excerpts from talks given by the LDS First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve. Most of these talks were given as part of BYU and CES Devotionals. And the entire book is geared towards people in the 12-25 age range.

Three Ways to use We’re With You as a Leader

1- As a subject matter reference

I know that as Mormons we are often counseled to search the scriptures, perhaps by starting in the topical guide. And while that is undeniably valuable, this book provides the same thing in an easier to understand format. There are sections on Marriage, Religious Freedom, Delayed Blessings, Finding Happiness, etc. Providing ready made advice from the brethren for a large variety of the most common concerns leaders might encounter.

2- For counseling the youth

Currently, the youth of the church face doubt, derision and potential confusion from all sides. We’re With You was designed with the youth especially in mind and specifically with the goal of providing support when a young member of the church has a question about a particular topic. It address exactly the sort of thing my own teenagers are worried about, and I appreciate that now I have this book to give them.

3- Support with the trials of leadership

The title of the book was not chosen randomly. Reading the book gives one the sense of being in the same room with the brethren, that they are in fact with you. They understand what you’re going through and the challenges you face. By compiling excerpts rather than whole takes the selections in this book feel more like friendly advice than an extended lecture. Which is not to say you shouldn’t read full talks, but occasionally it’s nice to just have someone say they’ve got your back.

It’s my understanding that some of the talks these excerpts came from were given as long ago as 1976. I would not have guessed that. The book feels incredibly timely and is yet another argument against the idea that the Brethren are out of touch with current issues and controversies.

This is a book I’ll keep nearby. I expect to reference it frequently and use it as a major resource as I raise my children and send them into the world. I give it my strongest recommendation.
