Let’s tip-toe into the world of membership councils (formerly known as disciplinary councils).
I’ve had my personal experience with this topic as a bishop and a member of a stake presidency.
I have heard them framed as the most spiritual meetings in the Church (that was my experience).
And I have heard them described as terrible, shame-filled experiences, that left the repentant feeling pushed away and condemned.
These are probably the trickiest meetings for new leaders to navigate (especially if they are the ones presiding).
With this said, I would love to survey a leadership audience, especially current/former bishops and stake presidents who have experience with these sacred and sensitive councils.
I have heard of several new leaders who are curious about how others are approaching these meetings.
So, let’s see what we can learn together.
- How does a leader know when to hold a membership council?
- How does a leader remove shame from the membership council process?
- How does a leader prepare other leaders who are involved?
- What should happen after the membership council?
- How can a leader continue to fellowship with individuals after the council meeting?
- What other membership council questions would you ask an experienced leader?
Sincerely,
