David Smurthwaite is fortunate to share life with his eternal girlfriend and four amazing young men. Over the past five years, they have lived in France, Spain, Rwanda, and Vietnam. They moved back to their hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah only two months ago.
David has served in many leadership positions in the church, including bishop, young men’s leader, and seminary teacher. He cherishes gospel principles and covenants which bring greater meaning to every part of his life. He is also proud to be part of the LGBTQIA+ community as someone who self-identifies as transgender.
Over the past month, David has begun collecting the stories of LGBTQIA+ members as part of a leadership research project. He has been humbled and inspired by the perspectives and testimonies shared by participants. In his Leading Saints presentation, you’ll hear David’s and many others’ perspectives on finding harmony and growth while actively finding their place in both the LGBTQIA+ and LDS communities. If you’re part of both communities and would like to add your voice (also anonymously, if you prefer), you can learn more here.
If you’d like to learn more about David, his story, and his family, you can find him on Medium and Instagram.
