The Church invited me to host a Leading Saints booth at the 2024 Together in Christ YSA Conference.
For two days I engaged with a vibrant group of young single adults, trying to be the cool guy. 😎
To encourage interaction at our Leading Saints booth, I purchased a stack of floor stickers and initiated the following prompt:
“I wish my bishop knew…”
I invited young single adults to complete the sentence as authentically and candidly as possible and then stick it on the floor.
Here’s what it looked like:
Here are some of the messages that young single adults added…
- I wish my bishop knew the mental health struggles I am going through
- I wish my bishop knew he is my role model
- I wish my bishop knew truly how much he has done for me and the ward
- I wish my bishop knew how much I appreciate my calling
- I wish my bishop knew how hard it’s been for me to feel like I belong in my ward
- I wish my bishop knew we are trying our best 😊
- I wish my bishop knew that I’d like greater training & accountability for my calling
- I wish my bishop knew how much we would like to know him on a personal level
- I wish my bishop knew how good of a leader he is
- I wish my bishop knew showing up is sometimes the hardest part
- I wish my bishop knew he is awesome!
- I wish my bishop knew how hard I’m trying to do the right thing
- I wish my bishop knew how much of a difference he makes
- I wish my bishop knew all of my emotional/mental fears
- I wish my bishop knew he made me stronger when he truly listened to me and showed that he cared
- I wish my bishop knew that it’s hard to open up & be vulnerable!
- I wish my bishop knew how perfectly suited he is for his calling
- I wish my bishop knew how difficult it can be to talk to him
- I wish my bishop knew how much his kindness matters!
So… now you know. 😊
One message that particularly impacted me, which I didn’t mention earlier, is this:
“I wish my bishop knew ME.”
I cannot emphasize this enough:
A leader can only lead on a foundation of relationships.
How would you finish this sentence? (Answer here)
