The message here about not having capable leaders pulling the unit in different directions based on their current responsibilities struck a chord with me. It was consistent with Elder Renlund’s message at the Temple and Family History Instruction in February 2020. (https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/family-history) Rather than teaching Temple and Family History Leaders a set of initiatives they should champion, Elder Renlund taught that the leaders’ first thought for engaging with their units should be, “How can I help?”, suggesting that the work of temple and family history should be a mechanism for helping to achieve ward goals for gathering Israel rather than an independent effort competing for members’ attention. The same thing is true of any of the other programs and organizations of the Church.
