We’ve been working hard over at the Leading Saints Community to make it easy to navigate the hundreds of hours of content we have there.

I am currently working on a “Bishops” section where I will list the best 10 episodes a bishop can watch/listen.

There is a piece of content there that is widely applicable to any leader. It’s called 7 Self-Sabotaging Habits of Latter-day Saint Lay Leaders (and What to Do About Them).

I recorded that monologue a few years ago, and there are a few places I probably disagree with today; however, I’d love to know where you agree or disagree.

In summary, here are the seven self-sabotaging habits I reference in that monologue:

  1. Creating a culture of unquestioned obedience to what the leader directs
  2. A leader’s lack of motivation to acquire accurate self-awareness by seeking out alternative perspectives and general leadership training
  3. Providing no venue to experience real connection
  4. Church/family imbalance: An excessive emphasis on the importance of family responsibility that causes individuals/families to disengage with the Church (and vice versa)
  5. Creating unintentional shame
  6. Too many targets and no vision
  7. Excessive gestures of niceness, love, or spirituality meant to influence a person to choose a specific life path

You can listen to the episode HERE.

Share your perspective and feedback on that same page.

Sincerely,
Kurt Francom
