Enter Terry…

We’ll be studying the Old Testament next year and that’s a hard book for many, and not just Isaiah. There is a lot of violence and other troubling material there. Maybe the Sunday School teachers can help the entire congregation in next year’s study with sacrament meeting talks.

Common to all talks (and lessons) is Nephi’s approach: how does this apply to me today? Here are some thoughts about possible sacrament meeting timing and topics.

He Patiently Leads Us Home

The Old Testament was not written for modern readers, but it was preserved for them. While some passages will remain challenging, they need not be faith-eroding if they are taught with context, charity, and an eye toward application. By coordinating lessons and sacrament meeting talks that emphasize covenant, redemption, and the Savior’s hand throughout history, we can help our wards engage the Old Testament without fear. In doing so, we invite members to see their own mortal journey reflected in Israel’s—and to recognize, again and again, the God who patiently leads His people home.
